Two Year Labour Market Opinions Now Being Approved for Alberta
Thinking about recruiting abroad to meet your staffing needs? Now is the time to do it!
Canada’s economy is strong and has weathered the global recession much better than most. As a result, Canadian employers in many sectors are experiencing a labour shortage and are looking abroad to meet their employment needs. This is especially true in the province of Alberta.
Recognizing this, the Canadian government has recently started approving two year Labour Market Opinions in Alberta, bringing the province in line with Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Quebec.
A bit of background: as a Canadian employer, you require a positive Labour Market Opinion (LMO) in order to legally recruit workers from abroad. Essentially, a positive LMO demonstrates that all efforts have been made to hire within Canada, and that no Canadian workers were available to do the job in question.
The length of your LMO dictates the length of the contract you’re able to offer to a temporary foreign worker, as well as the length of the corresponding work permit issued to said worker.
So, what does all this mean? Essentially, now that LMO’s are being approved for two years, you can offer new recruits a two year contract. This enables you to employ foreign workers in Alberta worry-free - without the head-ache of more paperwork - for two whole years.
